Canals

The Hague has more canals than one might initially expect. Although many people immediately associate canals with Amsterdam or Utrecht, The Hague possesses a rich maritime history, featuring an extensive network of waterways.

Many of the historic inner-city canals were filled in between the 19th and 20th centuries. Nevertheless, the city still contains approximately 250 kilometers of urban canals and waterways—including the Singelgracht, which remains entirely intact and encircles the city center. Furthermore, in recent years, the municipality has been actively working to re-excavate previously filled-in canals (as seen recently at Piet Heinplein) in order to restore the city’s historic character.
